Our History
Rev. Preston Edwards and Mrs. Cora Price founded Blueridge Methodist Church in January of 1955. The Gulf Coast Conference of the Board of Missions and Bishop W. J. King sent Rev. Preston Edwards to the Sunnyside area to seek the need for a Methodist Church. The first person he contacted was Mrs. Cora Price. The two went door to door seeking members for the charter. A required quota of 10 members was met. The first meeting was at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Johnson on February 4, 1955. Rev. George Buster Brannan was sent to Blueridge on March 14, 1955 to serve as pastor until the Annual Conference in May, at which time Rev. Hilton Huey was appointed pastor. In February of 1957, the Church at 9618 Chesterfield was completed. Rev. Huey served as pastor until his illness in 1966. Rev. Nathaniel McGinnis served for 10 months as an interim pastor. God has blessed us with many illustrious pastors who have guided the congregation through many and varied times. Times of success and advancement, times when economic situations pressed us to advance in the ways we wanted to and time when we just held on. It was under the leadership of Rev. Homer D. Williams, that the present edifice was built and the church relocated to 2929 Reed Rd. in May of 1993. Our current pastor, since July 2020, is Dr. Janice Gilbert.
Our Mission is to make new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Our Vision statement is to love God, to know God’s love and to share God’s love with our community and beyond.
As Methodists, we have an obligation to bear a faithful Christian witness to Jesus Christ, the living reality at the center of the Church’s life and witness. To fulfill this obligation, we reflect critically on our biblical and theological inheritance, striving to express faithfully the witness we make in our own time.
